UPI AutoPay vs eNACH — Complete Guide for Recurring Payments in India (2026)

Updated September 10, 2026 · 12 min read

For schools, NBFCs, gyms, and subscription businesses in India, the two workhorses of recurring collections are UPI AutoPay and eNACH. Both let a customer authorize automatic debits, but they operate on different networks with different limits, success rates, and use cases. This guide covers when to use which — and how to combine them for maximum recovery.

1. What is UPI AutoPay?

UPI AutoPay is a recurring payment mandate authorized on NPCI's UPI network. The customer approves a mandate once in their UPI app (GPay/PhonePe/Paytm/BHIM), and the merchant debits automatically on schedule.

How it works: Merchant creates mandate → Customer approves in UPI app → NPCI executes debit on schedule → Money moves from customer bank to merchant. Standard AutoPay allows recurring debits up to certain thresholds without additional authentication (AFA) at each debit; specific categories such as insurance, mutual funds, and card bill payments have higher exempted thresholds. Refer to your PSP/payment provider for the exact current limit applicable to your use case.

2. What is eNACH?

eNACH is an electronic mandate on the National Automated Clearing House (NACH) system operated by NPCI. It authorizes direct debit from a bank account.

How it works: Merchant creates mandate → Customer authorizes via Aadhaar/Debit card/Netbanking → Mandate activated with sponsor bank → Debit executed on schedule → Money moves from customer bank to merchant. eNACH supports higher-value recurring debits and multi-year mandates, making it common for EMIs and annual fees.

Note on limits: Threshold values and additional-authentication rules are set by NPCI and can be updated. Always confirm current applicable limits with your PSP or the NPCI official circular for your business category before communicating them to customers.

4. When to Use UPI AutoPay

  • Monthly school fees (typically ₹5,000–₹25,000)
  • Coaching center monthly installments
  • Gym membership monthly renewals
  • Society maintenance monthly dues
  • Small consumer EMIs (mobile, appliance)
  • Any monthly recurring under the standard AutoPay threshold

5. When to Use eNACH

  • Home/auto/business loan EMIs above UPI AutoPay threshold
  • Annual school fees (₹50,000+ single debit)
  • Insurance premium (annual/half-yearly)
  • Multi-year loan repayments
  • Where customer doesn't use UPI (older banking customers)

6. The Best Strategy: Use Both

Smart NBFCs and schools don't pick one — they layer:

  1. Primary: UPI AutoPay for regular monthly debits (fastest setup, highest success rate)
  2. Fallback: eNACH mandate as backup for high-value or when UPI AutoPay fails
  3. Retry: If both mandates fail, WhatsApp payment link with manual UPI/card option
  4. Field: Field agent visit only for chronic defaulters after digital retries

FastFee Handles Both

FastFee sets up UPI AutoPay + eNACH mandates in the same flow. Failed UPI debits automatically retry via eNACH. Field agents kick in only for chronic defaulters — massively reducing collection cost.
