Vehicle age — FAQ
How do I calculate my vehicle age in India?
Vehicle age in India is calculated from the registration date shown on your RC (Registration Certificate) to today's date. Use the registration date on your RC book — NOT the manufacturing date — as the official age that determines RC renewal, fitness certificate and insurance requirements. A vehicle registered on 15 June 2020 is 4 years, 3 months old as of September 2026.
When does my car RC expire?
For private cars and two-wheelers, the RC (Registration Certificate) is valid for 15 years from the initial registration date. After 15 years, you must apply for re-registration (RC renewal) at your RTO, which is then renewed every 5 years. Commercial vehicles have different validity periods — typically 10 years.
What is a fitness certificate for a vehicle?
A Fitness Certificate (FC) is a mandatory document for commercial vehicles in India, certifying that the vehicle meets safety and emission standards. Private cars and two-wheelers need a fitness certificate only after 15 years from registration. Commercial vehicles require FC every 2 years (initially after 2 years from registration).
Can I drive a 15-year-old car in India?
Yes, you can drive a 15-year-old car in India after getting the RC renewed and passing a fitness inspection. However, several cities and states have imposed End-of-Life (EoL) vehicle policies: Delhi-NCR bans 15-year-old petrol cars and 10-year-old diesel cars from running. Check your state's EoL rules before renewing RC for an older vehicle.
What is the difference between manufacturing year and registration year?
Manufacturing year is when the vehicle was built at the factory. Registration year is when you registered it with the RTO. Most vehicles are registered in the same year they are manufactured, but a vehicle manufactured in November 2019 and registered in January 2020 would officially be a "2020 registered" vehicle. Insurance IDV and RC renewal are based on registration date, not manufacturing date.
When do I need to renew my PUC certificate?
PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificates are typically valid for 12 months for vehicles less than 15 years old, and 6 months for vehicles over 15 years old. Driving without a valid PUC can attract a fine of ₹1,000–10,000 under the Motor Vehicles Act 2019. PUC tests are available at authorised testing centres and many fuel stations.
