What is eNACH Mandate?

eNACH (electronic National Automated Clearing House) is an NPCI-operated recurring payment mandate that authorizes direct debits from a customer bank account. Customers approve once via Aadhaar, debit card, or netbanking; recurring debits then execute on schedule. eNACH supports higher-value debits than UPI AutoPay, making it the default choice for home/auto/business loan EMIs, insurance premiums, and annual school fees in India.

How eNACH Mandate Works

  1. Merchant creates eNACH mandate with amount, frequency, and start/end date
  2. Customer receives mandate link (usually via WhatsApp or email)
  3. Customer authorizes via Aadhaar OTP (fastest), Debit card + PIN, or Net banking login
  4. Sponsor bank activates the mandate at NPCI/NACH level
  5. Debit executes on due date — customer bank auto-transfers to merchant
  6. Failure handling: If bank rejects (low balance, etc), retry per merchant policy

eNACH Mandate in India — Context and Adoption

eNACH replaced the paper NACH mandate that used to require physical form submission at a bank branch. Introduced by NPCI in 2016 and refined over the years, eNACH became the backbone of digital lending, insurance, and mutual fund SIP collections in India. NBFCs, banks, and businesses collectively process hundreds of crores in eNACH debits monthly. The 2020s addition of Aadhaar OTP authorization dropped mandate activation time from days to minutes.
