Why early-stage investors need 10x+ potential

Most early-stage investments return little or nothing. A portfolio works only if a few companies return many times the money, so angels and seed funds look for each deal to have a credible path to 10x or more.

Dilution is the most underestimated input. Two or three later rounds at 15โ€“25% each typically cut early ownership by 35โ€“55% before exit unless you follow on.

Worked example

โ‚น25 L at a โ‚น25 Cr post-money is 1%. After 40% dilution you own 0.6%. A โ‚น500 Cr exit after 7 years returns โ‚น3 Cr: 12x and about 43% IRR.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good return on a startup investment?

Venture investors target 3x+ net for a whole portfolio (roughly 20โ€“25%+ IRR). For each individual early-stage deal they look for 10x+ potential because many deals fail.

How much dilution should I assume?

Roughly 15โ€“25% per future priced round. From seed to exit, 40โ€“60% total dilution is a reasonable planning range if you do not follow on.

Does this include liquidation preference?

No. Use the exit scenario simulator or liquidation preference calculator to model preferences in low exits.
