Angel Portfolio IRR Calculator: Combined XIRR, TVPI & DPI

Calculate the real return on your whole angel or startup portfolio. Add each investment with its date, amount, current or exit value and exit date; the calculator runs XIRR on every cash flow and shows per-company and combined results.

QUICK ANSWERPortfolio IRR uses XIRR: it finds the annual rate at which the present value of all investments (outflows) equals the present value of all exits and current values (inflows), using each actual date. TVPI = total value ÷ total invested; DPI = cash returned ÷ total invested.
Σ CashFlow_i ÷ (1 + IRR)^(days_i ÷ 365) = 0
TVPI = Total value ÷ Invested DPI = Realized ÷ Invested

Measuring an angel portfolio honestly

Include write-offs at zero and mark unrealized holdings conservatively (last round or lower for struggling companies). Excluding failures makes IRR look far better than reality.

Angel portfolios follow a power law: a single company often drives most of the value. That is normal; the lesson is to keep investing consistently so you are in the rare outliers.

Frequently asked questions

What is XIRR?

An IRR calculation for cash flows on irregular dates. It is the standard way to measure returns when investments and exits happen at different times.

How should I value companies I still hold?

At the latest priced round, marked down if the company is struggling, has short runway or the round is old. Use 0 for companies that have shut down.

What IRR do angel investors get?

It varies enormously. Diversified angel portfolios held for many years have historically targeted 20%+ IRR, but most individual investments lose money.
