Marking a venture portfolio

The last round price is a starting point, not the answer. Mark down companies whose last round is old, whose metrics have weakened, that have short runway or that raised with heavy preferences. IPEV guidelines describe common approaches.

SEBI requires AIFs to value investments as per their valuation policy and to report NAV periodically. Consistency quarter to quarter matters as much as the method.

Frequently asked questions

How is NAV calculated for a venture fund?

Sum the fair value of each portfolio investment, add cash and other assets, and subtract liabilities like accrued fees. Divide by units outstanding for NAV per unit.

Should I mark companies at the last round price?

Only if nothing material has changed. Apply markdowns for stale rounds, missed plans, short runway or down-round signals.

What is RVPI?

Residual value to paid-in capital: NAV รท capital called. It shows the paper value still in the fund.
