QUICK ANSWERIn the dividing system, cost per meal-day = total mess expense for the month ÷ total days all students ate; each student pays their days present × that rate plus fixed charges. In the fixed system, students pay a flat monthly fee and get a rebate per day only for continuous leave above a minimum (often 3–5 days).

What is the dividing system in hostel mess?
The month’s total food cost is divided by the total number of meal-days of all students, giving a per-day rate. It is fair when students are often away, and common in IITs and university hostels.
