Best of five vs all subjects
CBSE marksheets show subject-wise marks and grades but no overall percentage. Most colleges and Delhi University forms ask for a best-of-four or best-of-five aggregate, often requiring one language. Use “all subjects” when a form asks for aggregate across every subject passed.
A student needs 33% in each subject (theory and practical separately in CBSE) to pass. A subject below 33% means a compartment / supplementary exam even if the overall percentage is high.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate best of 5 percentage?
Pick the five subjects with the highest totals (keep one language if your form requires it), add their marks and divide by the total maximum (usually 500), then multiply by 100.
Is the additional (6th) subject counted?
If the additional subject’s marks are higher, CBSE can replace a failed main subject with it for passing. For best-of-five percentage, most institutions allow counting it if it is among your highest marks.
What is first division?
60% or above is commonly called first division, 45–59.99% second division and 33–44.99% third division. Many universities call 75%+ “distinction”.
