School Admission Age Calculator (NEP 2020 age rules)

Enter your child’s date of birth and the session. You get the exact age in years, months and days on the cut-off date, the class they can join, the class for the next three sessions, and the date-of-birth range for every class from Nursery to Class 5.

QUICK ANSWERUnder NEP 2020 a child should be 6 years old for Class 1, with three pre-school years before it: Nursery / Balvatika-1 at 3+, LKG at 4+ and UKG at 5+. Most boards and KVS count age as on 31 March of the admission year, but some states use 1 April, 1 June, 30 June or 31 July. A child born on 15 May 2020 is 5 years 10 months on 31 March 2026, so they join UKG in 2026-27 and Class 1 in 2027-28.

How school admission age is calculated

Age is counted in completed years, months and days on a fixed date, called the cut-off. If the child turns 6 on or before the cut-off date, they are 6+ for that session. A child born one day after the cut-off waits another year.

NEP 2020 and the Ministry of Education’s guidance ask states to set the Class 1 entry age at 6+. Several states moved to this rule in phases from 2024-25, so the exact cut-off date and any relaxation (often up to 6 months or one month) depends on your state and school. Always confirm with the admission notice.

Many schools also set an upper age limit, for example a child should be below 7 on the cut-off for Class 1. The DOB table on this page shows the full one-year band for each class.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum age for Class 1 admission in 2026-27?

Six years completed on the cut-off date in states that follow NEP 2020 (most use 31 March 2026 or 1 April 2026). Some states still allow 5+ or 5.5+; check the state notification.

What age is needed for Nursery, LKG and UKG?

Under the NEP ladder: Nursery / Pre-school 1 at 3+, LKG / Pre-school 2 at 4+ and UKG / Pre-school 3 at 5+ on the cut-off date.

What age does KVS (Kendriya Vidyalaya) use?

KVS asks for 6 years completed as on 31 March of the admission year for Class 1, with Balvatika classes for 3+, 4+ and 5+. Check the KVS admission guidelines for the current year.

My child misses the cut-off by a few days. What can I do?

Some states and schools allow a short relaxation at the principal’s discretion. Otherwise the child joins the previous class (UKG / Balvatika-3) this year.
