QUICK ANSWERReal profit on credit sales = gross margin − interest cost (credit sales × interest rate × days outstanding ÷ 365) − bad debts − discounts − collection cost. For a distributor with a 12% margin and 13% cost of money, every 30 extra days of credit costs about 1.1% of sales, nearly a tenth of the margin.

Should I give a cash discount for early payment?
If the discount is lower than your interest saving plus reduced bad-debt risk, yes. 1% for payment within 7 days is cheaper than carrying 45-day credit at 13% interest (about 1.6%).
