The golden hour and how money gets frozen
Fraudsters move money through several “mule” accounts within minutes. When you report to 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in, the complaint goes to the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System, which alerts every bank in the chain to put a hold on the amount. That is why calling within the first hour is the single most important step.
Keep every proof: screenshots of chats and payment screens, the UTR number, the scammer’s number and UPI ID. Do not delete the chat. Never pay anyone who promises to “recover” your money for a fee: that is a second scam.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get my money back after a UPI fraud?
Often yes, if you act fast. When you call 1930 or report on cybercrime.gov.in quickly, banks can freeze the amount in the receiving account. Money is then returned through the bank or by court order. The later you report, the lower the chance.
What is the cyber crime helpline number?
1930 is the National Cyber Crime Helpline, and complaints can be filed online at cybercrime.gov.in. To report fraud calls and SMS, use Chakshu on the Sanchar Saathi portal.
Will my bank refund an unauthorised transaction?
Under RBI rules, if the fraud was not due to your negligence (e.g. you did not share OTP or PIN) and you report within 3 working days, your liability is zero. If you report in 4–7 days, liability is limited. If you shared your PIN or OTP, the bank may not be liable.
Does entering my UPI PIN receive money?
Never. You enter a UPI PIN only to send money. Anyone asking you to enter the PIN or scan a QR to “receive” money is a fraudster.
Where do I complain if my bank does not help?
Escalate to the bank’s grievance officer. If there is no reply in 30 days or you are not satisfied, file a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman on cms.rbi.org.in.
Is this tool free? Do I need to log in?
Yes, it is completely free and works without login on any phone. Nothing you type is uploaded; it stays in your browser.
Is FastFee a government website?
No. FastFee is a private Indian fintech. These free tools summarise official rules and always link to the official government portal, where the final decision is made.
